Boise...Again

2001

I met David in 2001 when we co-managed a very large and very long study in Boise, Idaho. David was the perfect counterpart for the insecure, neurotic workhorse that I was (am?); nothing seemed to phase him. He’d cheerfully field 5+ cell phone calls an hour from the partner (I’d “lost” my phone early on), methodically revise our model countless times (making the resulting changes to the 60+ page document) and unflappably lead a problem-solving session with 4 Directors from 8-10pm after a 3-hour progress review following an all-nighter. I think that this was the night (morning?) I knew that he would make partner, and probably, Director. David always had strong opinions about where our team should eat. And, he always preferred that we eat together. Meals could last for hours. I think that the crumble and whipped cream have already been mentioned, but the frozen yogurt/stir fry lunch locale that was David’s favorite has not. David allowed small things to give him great pleasure, but didn’t let small annoyances get to him – except as potential fodder for his wry sense of humor. David and I were working together during the horror that was 9/11. Until then, we’d not had many “deep” conversations (other than those where he’d coax me off the ledge yet again). As we talked about the many lives that were lost that day, David’s deep love for his family was palpable. Melissa – this man would have moved mountains for you. David talked about wanting to make a difference in the world. I know he did for me. Goodbye, David.
