Days at Alpine Meadows

2006 - 2008

I spent three years ski patrolling at Alpine Meadows with David. While most of the patrol was focused on teaching the finer points of sled handling, first aid, or radio etiquette, David taught me far more important lessons… like what to say to the Patrol Director when trudging up the parking lot after skiing in from an ‘out of bounds’ foray…. or what to say to a grumpy pro patroller after straight-lining by him down a freshly groomed Alpine Bowl… or where the best powder stashes were hidden 24 hours after the last snow… or how to get out of speed control duties. I am not sure that I have ever met anyone with David’s intelligence, drive, and professional accomplishment combined with such a disarming smile and ‘aww shucks’ attitude. That unique combination made him universally liked. In McKinsey interviews, they talk about the airport test (is this someone you would want to be sitting next to for 2 hours on a flight?). I suspect most people would want to sit next to David, and I know I certainly looked forward to sharing a chair lift with David at Alpine Meadows. David, thanks for three years of good patrolling memories… fresh powder, steep chutes, laughing, and occasionally actually dragging someone out of trouble. Todd McAllister
