Sixteen Going on Seventeen - A Story for Katrina - Christmas 2009

Created by Alethea Black 14 years ago
This is a story for Katrina from her aunt Alethea. It is one of my favorite memories from David's last Christmas. We were all staying at auntie Ashley's house in Los Angeles, and I think it was the day after Christmas. We had ordered take-out Indian food, and the adults were drinking beer; everyone was hanging out in the big open area of Ashley's new house. Your dad's wrist was in a cast, and earlier that day I'd seen him help your mom with Annika, and I'd said to myself: I have seen a man change a diaper with one hand. Now I've seen everything. (Your dad was always like that with you girls. Anything that had to do with you, he wanted to be a part of.) Anyway, it was dinnertime now, and The Sound of Music was playing on the big screen, and the songs were filling the house. We were all very happy. During one of the songs, I remember your mom and auntie Ashley dancing. We got to the finale to the song "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," when the girl and the boy almost kiss, and the room grew quiet. Then I heard your dad's voice. "Meliss, Meliss," he whispered. When he got your mom's attention, he said, "Look at Katrina." Apparently while everyone else was watching the movie, he had been watching you. I looked too, and I saw what he saw: You had the sweetest expression of utter, rapt attention. It was as if even though you were only six, you were on some level imagining yourself as sixteen, and maybe in that moment, he was able to see it, too. It was wonderful, and so beautiful, and I think I will always remember him and your mom smiling secretly at each other while they looked at you.
