Poem for David

We live ever hopeful of
the breathtaking moment,
the lifechanging minute
in which we discover
the grail we have always
sought. In a quick flash
we realize the meaning
is always reflected through
others, always an image that
subtly changed what we
beheld once we held it.
So many loved him in life.
If nothing beside remained,
that alone would be enough
to light his legacy. But then
there are those photos: the
crooked smile as he held his
daughters, radiant as bliss.
No one is ever missed this
much without having covered
the earth they trod with petals
of the love they left in their wake.
I did not know him; yet I have
witnessed the yearning and
heartbreak he gifted them all.
Now we will never meet;
but I know him now
enough to muse about
and miss all the tender
fled reality that will
forever remain refracted,
mourned and celebrated
in the lives of others.
